Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a type of treatment in which a trained and certified medical professional manipulates the soft tissues of your body, muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin using varying degrees of pressure techniques and movement.

Massage is generally considered part of a complementary and integrative medicine. It’s increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions

Types of Massage:

  • Swedish Massage
  • Sports massage
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage
  • Pregnancy and infant massage
  • Indian Head massage
  • Therapeutic massage

Benefits of massage:

Benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension

  • educed muscle tension.
  • improved circulation.
  • stimulation of the lymphatic system.
  • reduction of stress hormones.
  • relaxation.
  • increased joint mobility and flexibility.
  • improved skin
  • improved recovery of soft tissue injuries.

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is specifically tailored to assist in different sports and sporting injuries. It is not a relaxing form of massage and can often be quite strenuous. It works by stretching tight muscles, stimulating inactive muscles and improving the condition of the soft tissue in the body

The aim of sports massage is to reduce the stress and tension that can build up in the soft tissues of the body during exercise. This form of massage is used to:

  • increase endurance
  • improve performance
  • reduce the chance of injury
  • reduce recovery time after an injury

Sports massage borrows from other massage techniques used in other disciplines like physiotherapy and osteopathy.

Techniques include:

  • soft tissue release: locking and stretching the tissues and muscles
  • neuromuscular technique: targeting trigger points in the nervous system to get rid of pain and tension
  • positional release: used to relax hyperactive muscles
  • fascial release: deep, slow kneading used to release the connective tissues around the muscles

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

MLD is a light, skin-stretching massage that helps promote the movement of lymphatic fluid out of the swollen limb. It should not be confused with a traditional massage. MLD is specifically focused on the lymph vessels to help the flow of lymphatic fluid. Therapy is applied to your unaffected areas first, making it possible for the fluid to move out of the affected area, or “decongest” the region. MLD helps to open the remaining functioning lymph collectors and move protein and fluid into them, as well as to help speed up lymph fluid flow through the lymphatics.

Benefits of MLD:

  • Deeply relaxing
  • Decongestive (removes lymphoedema)
  • Pain Relieving
  • Improves wound healing and scarring
  • Detoxifying
